Mets Considering Re-Signing Bartolo Colon

The New York Mets are considering whether or not to re-sign Bartolo Colon, according to a person familiar with the team's thinking.

Colon was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

The Mets have an injury-plagued pitching staff. Colon was an All-Star with the club last season.

The 44-year-old was 2-8 with an 8.14 ERA in 13 starts before being designated.

Rays Release Derek Norris

The Tampa Bay Rays have released Derek Norris after he cleared waivers.

The move was made to make room for Wilson Ramos, who will be activated from the 60-day disabled list.

Tampa Bay added Norris before the season after he was let go by the Washington Nationals.

Nationals Sign Francisco Rodriguez To Minors Deal

The Washington Nationals have agreed to a Minor League deal with Francisco Rodriguez, according to multiple reports.

The Detroit Tigers released Rodriguez last week.

Rodriguez saved 44 games for the Tigers last season, but struggled with a 7.82 ERA in 25 1/3 innings this year.

The Nationals' bullpen has the third-west ERA (4.88) in the National League.

Mike Trout Sought Lifetime Deal From Angels

Mike Trout settled for a six-year extension with the Los Angeles Angels after bringing up the idea of a lifetime deal with the club, according to sources.

The $144 million agreement bought out three years of Trout's free agency.

Trout's current contract brings him to the open market at 29. The possibility of a 14- or 15-year deal was mentioned in talks with the club.

Yonder Alonso Open To Extension With A's

Yonder Alonso hopes to remain with the Oakland Athletics and is open to forgoing free agency by signing an extension at midseason.

Alonso believes Oakland's young players could make them competitive in the near future.

"I think that there is a great chance that I stay here," Alonso said. "I really do mean that. The guys they have, the young core that they have, are all guys I can relate to. ... A lot of players here say, 'I want to play well here, do well and get out.' I actually want to play well, do well and stay here."

Alonso, 30, is hitting .302/.397/.630 in 219 plate appearances this season.

Angels Sign First-Round Pick Jordon Adell

The Los Angeles Angels signed first-round pick Jordon Adell after he passed a physical on Thursday.

According to Baseball America, the outfielder received a $4,376,800 signing bonus.

"To me it was a no-brainer," Adell said. "I'm in a situation where I felt like I was the guy. This organization believes in me."

The Angels selected Adell out of Ballard High School in Louisville with the 10th overall pick in Monday's Draft.

"I just want to soak up all the information I can, and get the at-bats that I need and the reps that I need," he said. "When I'm ready, that time will come."

Jake Peavy Weighing Midseason Comeback

Jake Peavy declined all offers as a free agent this past winter, but he tells Alex Speier of the Boston Globe that he will pitch again.

Peavy is weighing a midseason comeback, although he could wait and pursue a deal this coming offseason.

"I can tell you with certainty, without a shadow of a doubt, I will play baseball again," Peavy said. "Whether that be this year or next year, I'm still up in the air. There are some opportunities to [sign] tomorrow. If that was to happen, I'm grateful for that. But the last year of my life has presented challenges I didn't foresee coming. It's something I've embraced."

Reds To Sign Cuban Shortstop Jose Israel Garcia

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to sign Cuban shortstop Jose Israel Garcia.

Garcia, who is subject to international bonus pools due to both his age and lack of professional experience, will receive a bonus of roughly $5 million on his Minor League deal.

Cincinnati has already exceeded their league-allotted international signing pool, they'll pay a 100 percent luxury tax on the signing.

Bryce Harper would like to play for the Chicago Cubs, according to Peter Gammons.

Gammons made the comment on 670 The Score. "I have people tell me that Bryce Harper, really, would prefer to play for the Cubs," the veteran reporter said.

Harper is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season and his next contract is expected to be worth more than $400 million.

Blue Jays To Release Mat Latos

The Toronto Blue Jays have released Mat Latos from Triple-A Buffalo, according to a report.

Latos, 29, signed a Minor League deal with the Blue Jays this offseason and has made three starts at the Major League level. The right-hander allowed a total of 11 runs on 19 hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts in 15 innings.

The release was a team decision.
